Improv Team on the Rise

Writer's picture: Silgo86Silgo86

From the inception of the Hanford Multicultural Theater Company, which I co-founded with my daughter, I envisioned creating an improv team. After two false starts, we finally have a team that embodies my vision.

My vision is inspired by the style of improv performed in Chicago and Los Angeles. I was fortunate to train with Chicago’s Del Close, the inventor of The Harold. He has influenced many great comedians, including Tina Fey (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation, Saturday Night Live). Many talented individuals trained at Chicago’s Second City, including Chris Farley (Tommy Boy, Saturday Night Live) and Steve Carell (The Office, Get Smart).

Additionally, I studied at Los Angeles’ renowned Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) and The Groundlings. Notable alumni of UCB include Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz (Don Quixote: The Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha, Second City). Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Saturday Night Live), and Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly, Ghostbusters) both studied their craft at The Groundlings. The UCB and Groundlings use Del Close’s Harold as their improv base.

I have assembled the perfect group to create an excellent improv team that will perform at the Lil' Brick Theater. These improv students are exceptional because they are eager to learn. Most importantly, they listen! Listening helps prevent the formation of bad habits and self-absorption, which doesn't work well in teamwork. Teamwork is paramount in any improv group.

There is still time for more members to join our improv class. Trust me, it’s fun.
